Introduction / History

The Awngi language is spoken by the Awi people, who live mainly in the Awi Zone in the Amhara Region but also in the Dangur District of Metekel Zone of Benishangul Gumuz Region and in the Q'uara and Alefa Districts of the North Gonder Zone of Amhara Region in Northern Ethiopia. The North Gonder Zone Awis are also called Kunfal.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Kunfals are predominantly farmers (using a plow) and very similar in culture to Amharas. The North Gonder Zone Awis (A.K.A. Kunfal), however, are very different in culture to the rest of the group. There are three subgroups: the Awigna, the Himtigna and the Kimantigna.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Kunfal are strongly Ethiopian Orthodox Christians and very resistant to any form of Protestant Christianity. The Awi people accepted Orthodox Christianity hundreds of years ago and have integrated it into their culture.

What Are Their Needs?

Kunfal churches need a fresh work of the Holy Spirit. As it stands, many have allowed traditions to become more important than a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Prayer Items

Pray for a powerful work of the Holy Spirit to shake up Kunfal spirituality, driving them to love Jesus Christ with all their hearts, souls and spirits.
Pray for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to focus on putting Jesus Christ high above all.
Pray that soon Kunfal disciples will make more disciples.
